How to get into Strength and Conditioning

We spoke to the Loughborough Sport Strength and Conditioning team to find out how they now find themselves as part of the Loughborough S&C Coaching team.

James Whitfield
Strength and Conditioning Coach

James WhitfieldBetween my second and third year I spent a year on placement at West Bromwich Football Club, primarily as an analyst and in the scouting department.

I started rugby coaching in my final year at Loughborough University, which led to some rugby strengthening and conditioning pitch sessions at Loughborough Town RFU.  This experience then led into my placement specialising in sports science and S&C. This opportunity came about by writing to pretty much every major sports team in the country and then by chance I met with a performance analyst on the train who happened to know that the WBA were in need of a new analyst intern. Its really all about getting out there to network and make new contacts!

Back at Loughborough for my final year I voluntarily worked for Leicester Tigers rugby team on their academy programme and with Loughborough University 1st Hockey team shadowing a strength and conditioning coach.

Sam Heathcote
Strength and Conditioning Coach

In my first year at university I joined an athletics club. My coach introduced me to weight lifting and I really enjoyed this side of training. This sparked an interest in S&C . In my final year I did an internship with Castleford Tigers Rugby League and my career developed with opportunities from then on!

Andy Thompson
Strength and Conditioning Coach

Andy TI took a strength and conditioning module whilst studying at college. My teacher advised me to get some work experience in the field at my local gym. I took my level 2 gym instructing qualification and ended up working in a gym for four years. I ended up coaching people in the gym and really enjoyed it which led me to complete both an undergraduate degree and MSC in sports science.
