Loughborough Netball and Loughborough Lightning
Loughborough is home to one of England Netball’s National Netball Centres and plays host to a comprehensive netball development programme for both students and non-students.
Leading the programme are Loughborough Lightning who play in the Netball Superleague. Lightning is one of the top netball teams in the UK having reached the Netball Superleague play-offs between 2008 and 2011. Recently, a number of the players were selected to represent England U21’s at the World Championships.
The Loughborough Netball Development programme
The Loughborough programme supports both student and non-student performers in the following training squads;-
– University performance squad
– Lightning Development Squad
– Loughborough Lightning
The overall programme encompasses different development strands for University players and non-student performers in Lightning’s main or development squads.
The priority for the coach will be to individually develop the best University players and coach the main Lightning team whilst overseeing the coaching of the Lightning Development Squad.
University performance squad
The University will have a performance squad of approximately 15 players. The programme for these players will encompass individual skills sessions, conditioning work, performance analysis and team sessions in preparation for BUCS competition.
University players can expect to be on-court four or five days each week and fit in approximately three other conditioning sessions each week. The University training programme underpins personal development for the students in the Lightning squads.
Lightning Development Squad
This will be a squad of 15-20 players comprised of both students and other regionally based players. The aim of the squad is to develop players who show the potential to play in Netball Superleague but aren’t yet ready for the main Lightning squad. The programme for this squad comprises two team training sessions per week complemented with a player-driven conditioning programme.
The 15 player Lightning squad is the pinnacle of the netball programme. The aim is to be the best netball team in the UK and to win Netball Superleague. The programme also encompasses two team training sessions per week with possible additional weekend sessions during breaks in the competitive programme. The support programme for the Lightning squad includes coaching, physiotherapy, video analysis, conditioning and sport psychology. The Lightning programme also draws further support from the sports science and medicine support programmes run by the University.
Lightning also opens up opportunities for students to get involved in voluntary roles in Superleague netball such as table officiating, media work and community coaching.
