After Loughborough, Charles taught PE before joining the Football Association’s coaching team in 1964. He managed the Great Britain Olympic and England amateur international sides until 1974 when amateur status in British football ended.
After a spell as Assistant National Coach, he was promoted to Director of Coaching early in 1990. His 33 years at the FA were highly influential, both nationally and internationally. He established new coaching schemes and schools networks and acted as an ambassador for the game. Following the Hillsborough disaster he was Director of the FA’s Blueprint for the Future of Football which transformed UK football and consolidated its position as world-leading.
