Loughborough Students Netball Club History 1975-1986

The Loughborough Students Netball Club was formed by Miss Sue Campbell in October 1975. Running only two teams in its first two years, with the new intake of female degree students in 1976, the club grew to four teams during the 1977/78 and 1978/79 seasons, successfully running three teams from 1979 onwards.

Since forming, the club has had outstanding success in inter-collegiate and inter-University competitions. During its first full season the Loughborough College team were runners up in the British Colleges sports Association Tournament (1976).

Since becoming part of the University the netball club have remained undefeated in inter-University competitions – winning the WIVA (Women’s inter-varsity Athletic Board) competitions in 1976/77 and 1978/79 and the U.A.U  (Universities Athletic Union) Competitions for the following six years (1979/80 – 1984/85).

Such was the strength of the club in 1978 / 79 under the coaching of Sue Campbell (a former England International) that the club entered their 2nd and 3rd teams into the W.I.V.A.B. competition instead of their 1st and 2nd teams. Both teams were undefeated. In the same season the 1st team entered the “National Clubs Tournament” and did outstandingly well to reach the semi-finals – thus indicating that Loughborough University had one of the top four Netball teams in the country.

The strength of the club was also highlighted by representatives from Loughborough in the BUSF team.  In the autumn of 1978 BUSF sent a team to tour Canada, included in the party were five Loughborough team members, Martine Treagus, Sue Tolley, Julie Suviste, Karen Booth and Maggie McNerney. The BUSF team won all their matches at club and provincial level and won the 3-match test series against the full Canadian senior team  (2-1).

In the following seasons Loughborough students continued to feature strongly in both UAU and BUSF teams. In 1979 seven members of the BUSF squad of nine were Loughborough players while in 1980/81 ten out of the fourteen players in the USF 1st and 2nd teams were from Loughborough.

The season of 1980/81 also saw the highest scoring match recorded by the club. In the U.A.U the Loughborough 2nd team beat Leicester University 2nd team by 121 goals to 5 – an average of one goal every 30 seconds!

1981/82 saw the first major tour of the club, to Canada. Coached by Karen Booth (one of the Loughborough players to tour Canada with BUSF in 1978) the team played eleven matches in twelve days, losing only two, and drawing with the Ontario State Team (which included several Canadian National Players) – a notable result for a club team.

The Netball club has also seen its fair share of international players, some of whom achieved national standard before joining the club, others who have achieved it whilst still at University.
