Intramural Sport Intramural Sport

History of IMS

The programme started in the Spring Term of the academic year 1956-57. At that time the events were between departmental teams. With the development of additional accommodation in the student village, thus evolved the inter-hall competition.

From the beginning the programme has been planned and directed by a member of the Physical Education, Sports Science & Recreation Management staff. Between 1969 – 1999 Mr. Pat Stone, lecturer in biomechanics, directed and developed the programme. Through Pat’s guidance, enthusiasm and passionate desire to encourage ‘participation’ at all levels in recreation and sports activities at Loughborough, the programme has developed into the most extensive university intramural programme in the U.K.

Since Pat’s retirement, the programme has continued to grow and develop. There are currently 16 halls taking part in over 32 one day events and leagues. Be sure to take a look around the website to learn as much about the programme as possible!
