The aim of the strand is to provide two progressive pathways, a recreational fitness & personal training pathway and fitness dance class instructing pathway. Both of these pathways will look to develop a students technical knowledge through a technical framework of vocational qualifications that are industry recognised. Alongside this technical knowledge students will be given the opportunity to acquire experience within a safe & supportive environment within Hollywell Fitness centre.

Recreational fitness & personal training pathway – How will it work?

Students who have been successful in gaining a place within this pathway will be likely to be those who are interested in developing a career as either a personal trainer, Exercise referral specialist or even a recreational fitness class instructor. The pathway will focus on developing the student’s technical competencies linked to the industry the development of personal attributes.

The pathway will provide volunteer fitness instructors the opportunity to gain practical experience of working in a gym environment and to support the delivery of industry leading levels of participation.  You will acquire the appropriate knowledge required to deliver fitness assessments, carry out gym inductions and keep appropriate records whilst at the same time work towards your Level 2 Fitness Instructor Qualification. During this time, volunteer gym instructors will be assigned an experienced mentor at Holywell Fitness Centre who will support your development throughout the process.

After completing your Level 2 fitness Instructor qualification and voluntary hours you will be given the opportunity to undertake further qualifications such as Les Mills fitness class instructing qualifications. These could enable you to in the future teach recreational fitness classes both during the pathway and externally to the University. Having completed the required numbers of voluntary hours you will also be eligible to apply for relief hours in the gyms on campus and have the relevant skills to be able to apply for the Trainee Fitness Instructor Placement year (based at Holywell) or the Graduate Fitness Instructor (based at Powerbase).

As part of the programme successful candidates will also be expected to complete: A reflection log book, Logging of hours on a weekly basis.

Please note that this pathway is not designed for those who wish to develop a career in performance Sport S & C. We will be launching a pathway in this area in due course but will be aimed at postgraduates.

Dance fitness  class instructing pathway  – How will it work?

Due to the expansion of the Mylife style programme and Student Union Sport activity programme we are looking to create a student workforce that is capable and confident enough to teach classes such as Bounce Dancefit and Zumba.

The pathway will provide volunteer Dance Fitness class instructors the opportunity to gain practical experience of delivering high quality classes  and to support the delivery of industry leading levels of participation.  You will acquire the appropriate knowledge required to deliver classes and at the same time work towards your Dance bouncefit instructor qualifications. During this time, volunteer fitness class instructors will be assigned an experienced mentor who will support your development throughout the process.

As part of the programme successful candidates will also be expected to complete: A reflection log book, Logging of hours on a weekly basis.

Continual professional development

Along side the more formal qualifications across both pathways we will be offering successful applicants  the opportunity to attend industry insight master classes. This academic year we have been lucky enough to have two industry leading professionals who partner with the CVA to deliver invaluable master classes to students. Adam Daniel (one of London’s top 6 personal trainers and owner of life:lab) will be delivering his second workshop “Training the human being NOT the human body” on 22nd March 2017. Alongside Adam, we also have Faye Downey (Elite Performance Manager at Oracle Elite Performance Management Ltd) coming in to deliver her second workshop on 22nd February 2017.
