Following on from Rob Taylor’s appointment as Loughborough Lightning Cricket Head Coach for the 2018 Kia Super League season, the franchise have confirmed that Matthew Hoggard will continue in his role, with Matt Machan completing the backroom staff.
Hoggard, well known for his playing exploits with England, was a great addition to Lightning’s coaching setup last summer, working predominantly with the pace bowlers but adding to the general positive atmosphere within the group. He will remain in the same role for 2018, having continued to work with the squad through the winter months.
Machan is a new addition however, the former Scotland and Sussex batsman forced to retire from playing at the end of last summer with a recurring wrist injury. A left-handed batsman, Machan made his Scotland debut in 2013 and featured for the side at the 2015 World Cup and World T20 in 2016; his career-best score of 192 came for Sussex against Somerset at Taunton in 2015.
Now focussing his energies on a career in coaching, Machan has already setup Precise Cricket Coaching, with the aim of developing young players with individualised programmes, and has been coaching at Brighton College, developing the next generation of male and female Sussex cricketers who will hopefully follow in his footsteps.
Of Machan’s appointment new Head Coach Taylor said:
It’s great that Matt is able to join us for the KSL. He was an excellent player for Sussex and Scotland notably performing when it really mattered on the big stage, which is something we hope he’ll bring to our setup. I have no doubt Matt will add great value to our coaching group and be able to share his experiences with the squad, so that we are prepared in the best way possible to succeed this summer.
I’m delighted to be joining the Loughborough Lightning coaching team this summer. I’m very excited and look forward to working with such a talented group of players – I really can’t wait to get started now.
