Loughborough Lightning players Olivia Jones (England) & Jenny Maxwell (Scotland) have been called up into their respective international 7’s squads ahead of this year’s 7s season.
Olivia Jones, a Loughborough University student, has been named in the England Sevens squad that will play in the fourth leg of the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series in Langford, Canada on 12-13 May.
Jenny Maxwell will join the Scottish squad and Loughborough Alumna Hannah Chrisp for their first training camp ahead of the Rugby Europe Grand Prix series event at Marcoussis, Paris on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 June.
Looking to build upon the success of previous Loughborough players at an international level, Loughborough Sport has launched a brand new partnership with Scimitar Storm, creating a high performance 7s programme looking to develop both male and female players at Loughborough. The programme will work closely with the RFU National programmes to expose players to performance 7s alongside high calibre external players.
Loughborough and Scimitar Storm Coach Rhys Edwards shared his delight on the girl’s selection and looks ahead as to how the new partnership will benefit Lightning players:
“I’m very pleased for both Liv and Jenny on their respective call-ups, which are thoroughly deserved. As ever this speak volumes for what we’re trying to achieve here in Loughborough. Our setup links our 7s and 15s programmes to aid all round rugby development, with the goal of ensuring our players can play at the highest level they are capable of.
“As coaches we want to ensure we allow our international players to both train and play at a high-level year round, so that when an international call up comes their way they are ready to step into the fold and make an instant impact.”
