Lightning Rugby look to secure play off spot

Loughborough Lightning Rugby will be looking to put on a show stopping performance this weekend as they battle with Gloucester-Hartpury Women for the final play-off spot in the Tyrell’s Premier 15 championship.

Both Lightning and Gloucester-Hartpury seem to have left their best rugby till last with Gloucester-Hartpury holding table toppers Saracens to a draw, then pipping second place Harlequins, having built momentum throughout the season. Lightning meanwhile have claimed big wins over third place Wasps and Bristol, setting up what will be a thrilling final encounter between the two sides. The last time they meet, Lightning took the win 43-33 in one of the most physical games witnessed all season. With both sides looking to secure the coveted fourth sport, we look forward to seeing one of the most hotly contested games of the season.

Lighting welcome Jenny Maxwell, Sarah Bonar, Rachel Malcolm (Scotland rugby) Sarah Hunter, Cath O’Donnell and Charlotte Pearce (England Rugby) who all return to the side after successful Six Nations campaigns with their respective countries. Leah Bartlett, Lizzie Adam, Emma Hardy and Amelia Harper also return from England U20’s camp.

Looking ahead to the game this weekend Head Coach Rhys Edwards said:

“Can’t believe it’s the final game of the regular season already. This year has flown by and seeing this group become a team and develop over the year has been fantastic. To be where we are in the league is a huge success and to be able to go into the final game of the season with an opportunity to get into the play offs just shows what we are capable of. The way the squad is playing we are confident that we can put together a performance on Saturday that will be special. The squads excited to go out and showcase what they can do. Gloucester- Hartpury are in a similar position to us but have been established for a few years longer there we will have to be at our best to ensure we win.“

The game takes place at Hartpury College at 1pm on Saturday 24th March.
