A focused Lightning ready themselves for a tough game against top of the table Saracens

After last week’s game being postponed due to snow, Lightning look to come out the blocks all guns blazing as they welcome top of the table Saracens Women to Loughborough University this Saturday at 12pm.

With recent wins over Richmond, Gloucester-Hartpury and Bristol, Lightning showed that they are real challengers in the battle for a top four spot. Lightning’s game has evolved throughout the season; with the final few games really demonstrating that Lightning can play with pace, intensity and can carry the ball forward with ease. With Saracens coming into the clash undefeated, Lightning will look to use their newly honed skills to upset the table toppers.

So far this season Saracens have managed a clean sheet, claiming victories over fellow heavy hitters Harlequins Ladies and earlier in the season tore apart third place Wasps.  When the two teams met last, at the Allianz Park in the second round of the Tyrrells Premier 15’s, Saracens claimed the home win 34-20. Despite the loss, Lightning managed to put more points past the table toppers than any other team in the league, a feat that they will look to build upon this weekend.

This week Lightning welcomes back Olivia Jones, Amelia Harper and Emma Hardy to the side after their successful trip with the England Braves to play in the Dubai 7’s. Charlotte Pearce takes up the full back shirt as she returns from a finger injury.

Speaking about the challenge ahead of Lightning this weekend coach Rhys Edwards said:

“As disappointing as it was to have the game postponed last weekend it has given us some extra time to rest and refocus on the game against Saracens.

Saracens have shown that they are the pace setters of the league and recently beat Harlequins to remain undefeated. When we played them at Allianz we showed that we could score tries against them, what’s important is that we need to show how much we have improved as a group. It’s going to be a tough game with their big players in form, but collectively we are capable of performing and beating them.”

The game takes place at Loughborough University on Saturday 16th December, noon kick off.
