Lightning looking to continue home run

Loughborough Lightning Rugby will be looking to put in a strong performance against Gloucester-Hartpury women this Saturday after a two week break in Tyrell’s Premier 15 action.

Bolstered by a win as the clubs’ two second team’s faced off last weekend, Lighting will look to carry on where they left off, having clinched their first away win against Bristol last time out. Prior to that the side in purple have won their last two home fixtures, and will be looking to make it three in a row on Saturday. If they can capture some of that form in this week’s game against Gloucester –Hartpury it should make for a great contest.

So far this season Gloucester-Hartpury have been in good form, gaining wins over Wasps and Darlington Mowden Park Sharks, two clubs that Lightning could not conquer away. That being said their defeat to Bristol Ladies means they sit just one place above Lightning in the table.

Lightning players Olivia Jones, Amelia Harper and Emma Hardy all received the call up to play for the England Braves in Dubai 7’s this week and so will be missing from the side. Their absence allows youngsters Isla Alejandro and Megan Davey, both FE College students who have impressed coaches in Lightning 2’s games, the opportunity to show what they can do as they make the step up into the Lightning 1’s squad.  Both Sarah Hunter and Cath O’Donnell return to the Lightning squad after a greatly successful Old Mutual Wealth series, which saw Hunter receive her 100th and O’Donnell her first senior international Red Roses cap.

Looked ahead to the game this weekend Head Coach Rhys Edwards said:

“Our match focus this week is to win! We have had a few weeks off to rest and spend some time looking at the details of our game.

The squad has trained well this week and selection is becoming tough with players from BUCS and Lightning 2’s really stepping up to the plate and producing performances that have earnt them places in the Lightning squad.  Amber Guest, Megan Moran and Catherine Rose are all great examples of this with them all stepping up to the Lightning squad for the first time this week .

Hartpury-Gloucester are going to be a very good team, with some very exciting players. It’s important that we utilise our home advantage and concentrate on the keeping the ball and controlling the game.”

The game takes place at Loughborough University at 12pm on Saturday 2nd December.
