Eight Loughborough Triathlon Performance Centre (LTPC) athletes have touched down in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, ahead of this weekend’s ITU World Triathlon Championships.
Representing British Triathlon, with whom the LTPC partnership is with, four men and four women will be in action in six different races.
2017 Human Biology graduate Sophie Coldwell will be looking for a strong performance in the U23 women’s race, having won silver at the European Championships earlier this year.
Stepping down an age group, current Loughborough University student Sophie Alden will contest the junior women’s race alongside Olivia Mathias. Like Coldwell did, Alden is studying Human Biology, whilst Mathias will start her studies in a couple of weeks’ time. Mathias was fifth at the European Junior Championships this year.
Sticking with the junior races, both Ben Dijkstra and Barclay Izzard will go in the men’s race before commencing their studies at Loughborough. Dijkstra won bronze in 2016 so will be hoping to be on the podium again in Rotterdam.
Jodie Stimpson is a familiar name to triathlon fans having won double Commonwealth gold at Glasgow 2014, and she will contest the senior women’s race as she continues her return to full fitness after injury. Alongside Coldwell and Djiskstra, Stimpson was part of the silver medal winning Loughborough team at the British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup.
Paratriathletes George Peasgood and Ryan Taylor round out the awesome eight, contesting the PTS5 and PTS3 races respectively. Peasgood who suffers from a left leg/ankle impairment is the youngest paratriathlon medallist ever, whilst Taylor, who has cerebral palsy, is also a World Championship medallist.
Coverage of the event can be found on the BBC Red Button and on BBC Two between 12.45 and 17.15.
