Loughborough Student’s Rugby Football Club (LSRFC) got their seven’s season off to a strong start on Wednesday 19th April as they hosted England Academy and three of the best University sides in the country in a five way tournament.
The inaugural University Partnership Performance 7’s tournament pitted the four Rugby Football Union (RFU) student hubs for seven’s against one another, with an England Academy side also thrown into the mix for good measure.
Ultimately the England side were too strong for everyone else, winning all four of their games to be crowned winners on a cold but sunny day at Loughborough University. Northumbria were runners-up with LSRFC finishing third, ahead of both Bath and Durham, the latter of whom they beat 55-0 in the final game of the day.
Commenting on the tournament England Seven’s Head Coach Simon Amor said:
It’s been an absolutely fantastic day – we’ve obviously been blessed with the weather but the quality of the facilities here make a big difference in playing this game, and we’ve been very lucky that Loughborough have hosted us. I have been really impressed with the standard of all four university teams and it’s been really good for me in terms of scouting and talent ID.
Of the Loughborough team’s performance, new Sevens Head Coach John Brake added:
What a brilliant day to test yourself against some quality opposition. I think for a lot of these teams it’s the first time they are getting a run out this season so it’s great to be able to test yourself against the likes of an England team. We have gained a lot in the four games and go into next week with a real focus.
Our main goal for the season is to try and win the BUCS 7s Championships next week. We know the level we are up against; we’ve got Northumbria, who beat us today, in our group, so if that’s not enough motivation for you I don’t know what is!
