Seven Loughborough men named in England Hockey squad heading to Malaysia

England Hockey have today announced their 18-man England squad who will travel to Malaysia on Sunday to compete in an eight-team tournament, which acts as the next stage of preparations for this summer’s World Cup qualifiers in London.

Included in the squad are seven current or former Loughborough University students, namely Jonty Griffiths, who gets his first senior call-up.

Alumnus and Olympians Barry Middleton and Mark Gleghorne will be joining the squad after a recent stint playing in the India Hockey League, whilst fellow alumni Henry Weir retains his place in the squad after a strong performance in Rio last summer.

Current students Harry Gibson and Ian Sloan are also named in the squad after impressing Head Coach Bobby Crutchley whilst training down at Bisham Abbey as part of the new look England Hockey Central Programme.

Chris Griffith is the final Loughborough inclusion, the former University student back in the side after missing out on Rio 2016 due to injury.

With the 2018 Men’s Hockey World Cup in India on the horizon all of the players will be looking to make their mark and prove they deserve a spot in the World Cup Qualifying squad this summer.
