Women's Rugby Scrum

The 2XV girls managed a convincing win against one of Loughborough’s neighboring universities, De Montfort University, in the first clash of their 2015/16 season.

After a booming intake of both experienced and new-to-the-sport freshers, LSWRFC has been able to present a 2XV for this season once again following the success of last year’s team who’s fight for victory ended in the quarter final against Worcester. The 2XV’s head coach, Scarlett Cooper-Wall, has been a key figure in undertaking the task of transforming a squad of girls into the hard hitting players who took to the pitch in Leicester.

Following a nervous fumbled kickoff, the game began with a scrum – the first of many to follow between two physical sides. The conditions were overcast, muddy and cold, working in the favour of the forwards. Loughborough were first to score, leading 5-0 within the first few minutes. However, due to a few mistakes, the DMU team were allowed a chance to score points through a penalty. Although mistakes at the breakdown plagued the Loughborough girls in the first half, they began to gain momentum steadily throughout the game and seemed to improve with every phase. 5-3 to Loughborough.

One of our newest players, Siwan Holloway, made some of the hardest hits of the game. Another player, Ellie Smales, was a standout performer in the scrum. Loughborough began to come into their own during the late stages of the second half, scoring two tries and having one successful conversion.

Half time: Loughborough 17 – De Montfort 3

In the second half, DMU’s pack were progressively more challenging in the scrum and were equally as testing in the line out. Despite their larger pack size, however, Loughborough met the challenge. Around the 60 minute mark, the front row replacements were made which increased the pace of the game. As a result, there came an onslaught of tries and points scored by the girls in purple, including a storming try by prop Nyareso Mokaya. As the game wound on, the 2XV began to prematurely drop their guard, allowing DMU to score a late try and bring the final scoreline to 46 – 10.

Final Score: Loughborough 2XV 46 – De Montfort 10

Next Wednesday the 2XV take on East Anglia on the Towers Pitch, kick off at 2pm.
