After an agonizingly close first two quarters, Loughborough W2 managed to storm ahead with a huge win over Worcester W1 beating them 83 – 57.
With a healthy intake of freshers, the Women’s basketball team has had a testing start to the season with a tough win over UEA W1 and an unfortunate loss against Nottingham W1. This week they took on Worcester W1 in front of a home crowd in Sir David Wallace sports hall.
Loughborough were quick to assert themselves over the away team, with Loughborough’s 24 Merissa, drawing first blood against the aggressive Worcester side. However, the away team easily matched Loughborough with a quick response to every score leading to a tight first quarter as Worcester began to take the lead. Before the away team could get too far ahead, Loughborough’s 8 and 24 managed to put the home team back in the lead with an impressive display of teamwork.
Worcester were an incredibly physical side and committed several fouls which meant that whilst they did regain the lead, Loughborough were given the chance to claw their way back with multiple free throws. Loughborough led the second quarter with our number 5 working tirelessly to keep up the pace.
Halftime: Loughborough 38 – 29 Worcester
The third quarter was the beginning of Loughborough’s domination over Worcester as the away team continued to rack up the fouls. During this quarter, the away team seemed lackluster as the girls in purple steamed ahead. However, Worcester did not stop challenging Loughborough as reflected by the score line at the end of the third quarter 55-44 to Loughborough.
In the fourth quarter Loughborough began to shine, unrelenting in their defense and unforgiving in their offense. By the final buzzer, the score was Loughborough 83 – 57 Worcester.
“We came out and played really well defensively today… we are a small but fast team who can run the ball and our speed won us the game.” Hannah Harris, 14 shirt.
The basketball W2 take on Birmingham W1, away, next week on the 4th of November. Meanwhile, the Loughborough W1 travel up to Edinburgh and the W3 tackle Leicester W1 in the Sir David Wallace sports hall at 16:00.
