Loughborough MCCU Women took victory at the Home of Cricket, beating Exeter University Women in the BUCS Final.
The girls headed to Lords looking to secure their fifth title in as many years at the ground. Loughborough won the toss and elected to put Exeter in to bat first. A good opening spell from Shrubsole and Langston reduced Exeter to 11-2, before they recovered to post 186-7 from their 50 overs.
In reply, Loughborough started strongly thanks to Adams and Jones, before two half-centuries from Captain Sciver and Elwiss put them in sight of the title. The winning runs were hit by Shrubsole with an emphatic six to secure Gold for Loughborough by five wickets with over 22 overs to spare.
We spoke to Head Coach, Sal Briggs to get her take on the match:
I am so pleased the girls continued their unbeaten form at such an iconic place. It was particularly pleasing for the 8 players who graduated this year to finish their journey on high.
I think its an incredibly proud moment for Loughborough University to not only maintain the championship, but to have a number of players who have gone through the full University cycle and have become full international cricketers.
A special mention has to go to our captain Natalie Sciver who scored a quick 50 and bowled with pace and swing when Exeter we’re building a big partnership and to Anya Shrubsole who bowled with control first up, which gave us the momentum from the off.
Well done to the girls for another great season and to everyone involved with the Loughborough MCCU Women’s program.
