Loughborough Sport lose out to Team Derby in NBL Final

Loughborough Sport 2 – 3 Team Derby

Loughborough Sport, with an incredible 5-0 win over Surrey Smashers in the semi-final, headed into the National Badminton League Championship Final with high hopes of beating Team Derby.

First match of the afternoon saw our Men’s Doubles with Greg Mairs and Peter Briggs taking on European Champion Chris Coles and world ranked number 10 Andy Ellis. Team Derby came out strong from the start with some excellent badminton played by both Loughborough and Derby. Despite a good fight in the third game, Derby took the victory beating Loughborough 3-0.

Next up was the Women’s Doubles with Chloe Birch and Jenny Wallwork competing against U19 reigning national champion Lydia Powell and England player Tiara Samuel. Birch and Wallwork with all to play for were the stronger of the sides from the offset and beat the Derby duo 3-0.

Our third match of the evening saw our very own Henri Hurskainen take on England ranked number 1, Rajif Ouseph. In a spectacular match, and with a number of close calls, the match was at 2-2. With Hurskainen fighting the whole way through, Ouseph stole the win, with a final score of 3-2.

Our fourth match of the afternoon was the Mixed Doubles with Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith facing Scottish player Martin Campbell and former world number 1 Gails Emms MBE. Ellis and Smith knew they had to take the win from Derby for Lougborough to be in with a chance of taking the Championship title. With this in mind, both Ellis and Smith fought hard and came out with a 3-0 against a strong Derby side.

Our final match saw our very own Linda Zetchiri take on European Bronze Medalist Karen Schnasse. Zetchiri had to win for Loughborough Sport to take the NBL Championship title. With a hard fought game, Schnasse managed to take the win in a close encounter, 3-0.
